Start-ups: the pioneers of “New Work”

With jogging pants in front of the PC. With a tablet in a café, on the train or in the park. Working from home and on the move have long been part of everyday life for many start-ups. But digitalization is making even more possible. Cloud technologies, mobile devices, virtual meeting tools and home office equipment are enabling a whole new way of working: With work-life blending, flexible working hours, more purpose and greater freedom. New work is a megatrend that will radically change our work culture. Help shape the change and become a pioneer for “New Work”.

9 to 5 in the office, competition, 60-hour weeks, burn-out: for many start-ups, these are horror scenarios of the past. Young entrepreneurs are passionate about their work. But sacrificing their lives for a career alone or putting their own health at risk – most of them no longer want to do that. Instead, Generation Y and Z in particular want to work flexibly in terms of time and location. At work, they want to be self-determined and creative, have freedom and live flat hierarchies.

Home office as the office of the future

The digitalization push spurred on by coronavirus has rapidly advanced these new forms of work: digital platforms and video conferencing tools enable collaborative teamwork, regardless of where everyone is physically together. Corona has shown that working from home works and does not make employees any less productive. What’s more, companies also save money when they replace costly business trips with virtual meetings and no longer have to have a workstation permanently available for everyone in the office.

Trust instead of control – Culture & Values

But even if digital technologies have simplified many things. Self-determined work also requires trust and personal responsibility. That’s why “New Work” is also about a new corporate culture. A culture that does not control people, but allows them to work independently. For managers, this means letting go. This is the only way for companies to create an attractive working environment. And promote freedom and productivity in equal measure.

New Work & Purpose

For many young employees today, however, it’s not just about flexibility and self-determination. Many are also driven by the search for meaning in their job. Gone are the days when salary and career opportunities alone determined which career path people took. Today, it is meaningfulness coupled with ecological, social and ethical values that make the difference. It is also fitting that new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) will take over more and more strenuous and monotonous work in the future. This will leave more room for meaningful and fundamental human skills such as creativity, empathy and intuition.

Start-ups as pioneers

Start-ups are clear pioneers here: for anchoring other values in everyday working life, for a different corporate culture, for flexible working time models and also for reinventing the office. Because in times of remote working, the office no longer has to be a place of control and duty fulfillment. Today, the office can be a hub for creative teamwork. A place where new things are created and where cohesion, creativity and empathy can flourish. Such an office culture ultimately not only enables more innovative products and services. It also strengthens the resilience of companies, creates satisfied employees and promotes long-term health and productivity. New Work can therefore pay off. Most start-ups have long since discovered this. But even young companies still have plenty of scope to reinvent the way they work: With remote work and digital tools, with more co-determination, autonomy and innovation.
